The problem with sugar-sweetened beverages is that they have an enormous amount of sugar in them. No diet needs to include sugar-sweetened beverages. There is always an alternative – water for instance.
Professor Brad Frankum, president of AMA (NSW), says these beverages need to be taxed. He says while such a tax isn’t going to solve the obesity crisis, it would raise quite a lot of money that can then be used for the national obesity plan: exercise and dietary programs, advertisements, and education of health professionals.
